Public relations and media relations emphasize the art of the message. Good messaging means bringing out the best of an organization, a product, a service. It also includes minimizing bad press, bad reviews, and just plain bad vibes.
A couple of weeks ago, in an interview with Parade magazine, Brad Pitt commented on his marriage to Jennifer Aniston, summarizing that it as a big yawner. That he wasn’t himself, that “he wasn’t living an interesting life.” Maybe it was a PR move to gain publicity for his newest film, Moneyball. However, Pitt’s unflattering comments about his previous marriage apparently back-fired when Jen’s PR people cried foul. This prompted a “clarification” by Pitt during an interview with Matt Lauer.
Listen up: if you need to clarify a statement your made to the press or back-pedal on some of your comments in an interview with a major outlet – you should have heeded one of the primary rules of PR: K.I.S.S. – Keep It Shut, Silly!
